April 30, 1900                        A paper prepared by Paul Villard entitled ?Sur le rayonnement du  radium? was presented by Jules Volle at the Monday meeting of the Acadếmie de Sciences on this date describing the properties of gamma rays. 

 

 

 

 

 

1903                                       Demonstration of optical resonance fluorescence by R. W. Wood was published in this year (Phil. Mag. 1903, 6(Sixth Series), 362).

 

April 20, 1922                        Hendrik de Waard, an Honorary Member of the International  Board on the Applications of the Mössbauer Effect, was born on this day.

January 15, 1939                  This is the date of publication of the paper by W. E.  Lamb, Jr., on        the neutron capture of g-rays that was used for theoretical explanation of Mõssbauer?s observations. It was entitled ?Capture of neutrons by atoms in a crystal? and appeared in Phys. Rev. 1939, 55, 190.

 

1951                                       First observation of Effect by P. B. Moon by mounting a source on an ultracentrifuge published in a paper entitled ?Interference between Rayleigh and nuclear resonant scattering of gamma rays? in Proc. Phys. Soc. 1951, 64, 76, during this year.

 

1952                                       Using a thermal method, K. G. Malmfors during this year published an observation of the Effect (Ark. Fys. 1952, 6, 49).

 

January 9, 1958                    First paper by R. L. Mõssbauer entitled ? Kernresonzfluoreszenz von Gammastrahlung in Ir191? published in Z Physik. 1958, 151, 124, was submitted on this day.

                                               

August 3, 1959                      The first paper on the Mössbauer Effect of 182W (L. L. Lee, L. Meyer-Schutzmeister, J. P. Schiffer, D. Vincent, Phys. Rev.Lett. 1959, 3, 223 [59L01]) was received on this date.

 

September 25, 1959            The paper entitled ?Some Simple Features of the Mõssbauer Effect? by Harry J. Lipkin, was received on this date. It was    published in Ann. Phys. 1960, 9, 332. The second paper was published in Ann. Phys. 1962, 18,182.

 

November 23, 1959              The first two papers on the Mõssbauer Effect of 57Fe were received on this date and published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 1959, 3, 554, co-authored by R. V. Pound and G. A. Rebka, Jr., and Phys. Rev. Lett. 1959, 3, 556 co-authored by J. P. Schiffer and W. Marshall.

June 6-7, 1960                      First Conference on Mõssbauer Effect was held during these    days at the University of Illinois. It was published as Mõssbauer        Effect; Recoilless Emission and Absorption of Gamma Rays, H.                   Frauenfelder and H. Luster, Ed., AF-TN     60-698, and is known as      ?The First Mõssbauer Conference Report?.

September 13-15, 1961      The Second International Conference on the Mõssbauer Effect             and the first in Europe was held in Saclay, France during these   days. December 11, 1961             On this date, R. L. Mõssbauer was awarded the Nobel Prize     in         Physics ?for his researches concerning the resonance absorption           of gamma radiation and his discovery in this connection of the                   effect which bears his name? and shared it with Robert Hofstadter        who received it ?for his pioneering studies of electron scattering in   atomic nuclei and for his thereby achieved discoveries concerning        the structure of the nucleons?.

 

April 26, 1962                        On this date, E. A. Phillips and L. Grodzins presented a talk on the                                                 Mössbauer Effect of 184W (Bull. Am. Phys. Soc. 1962, 7, 359)             during this day.

July 3-6, 1962                        The first Working Conference on the Mössbauer Effect in the Soviet Union was held in Dubna, USSR, during these days, and the proceedings published as the Proceedings of the Dubna Conference on the Mössbauer Effect (English Translation, Consultants Bureau, NY, 1963).

 

July 3, 1962                           The observation of the Mössbauer Effect of 159Tb was presented          on this date at the Conference on the Mössbauer Effect in Dubna,        USSR (I. Dezsi, L. Keszthelyi, Proc. Dubna Conf. ME, p. 64/ 7-1             [63D14C]).

September 1966                   Mõssbauer Effect Data Index 1958-1965, edited by A. H. Muir, Jr.,       K. J. Ando, and H. M. Coogan, (Interscience Publishers, New            York, 1966) was published in this month. This was continued as                          yearly issues until 1977.

 

June 1967                              The first Mössbauer Spectroscopy Institute was held during this            month at The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC. The          lectures were published as An Introduction to Mössbauer                            Spectroscopy; May, L.; Ed., (Plenum Press; New York, 1971).

 

February 10, 1971                Ranger Scientific. Inc., (Manufacturer of Mössbauer equipment)            was founded in Alva, OK, on this date.

 

August 25-30, 1975              The first paper on the Rayleigh Scattering of Mössbauer            radiation technique (RSMR) was presented during the        International Conference held in Cracow, Poland and published                               as D. A. O?Connor, Proc. Int. Conf. Mössbauer   Spectroscopy,           1975, 1, 396.

November 18, 1976              The first Nassau Mössbauer Conference was held at the            Nassau Community College, Garden City, NY on this date. Its editors were John G, Stevens,                   Virginia E, Stevens and William L. Gettys.

 

April 1978                              The first Seeheim Workshop was held under the direction of P. Gutlich at the Seeheim/Bergstrasse, FRG, during this month.

 

1988                                       In this year, the first International Symposium on the Industrial    Applications of the Mössbauer Effect (ISIAME'88) was held at                                                            Parma, Italy.

 

June 1989                              The Mössbauer Spectroscopy Institute, Industrial Applications was      held during this month at Ranger Scientific, Inc., in Ft. Worth, TX.                                                

1998                                       MIX, Electronic Journal on Mössbauer Spectroscopy, was                                                         begun in this year.
