Summary of Research Interests

Our group is involved in the synthesis and magnetic characterization of mono- and dinuclear transition metal complexes. For complexes of iron, these investigations provide information on the conditions necessary for the stabilization of admixed and intermediate spin states and spin crossover behavior, phenomena relevant to the understanding of some metalloenzyme functions. Also of interest is the investigation of magnetic coupling between paramagnetic metal centers and, in particular, the effect of crossover behavior in one metal on the type of coupling observed in the dinuclear system. As part of studies related to cytochrome-based biological systems we are investigating the reduction of iron(III) porphyrin systems by amines, the synthesis of stable iron(III) porphyrin thiolate complexes and the synthesis of thiolate bridged dinuclear complexes of metalloporphyrins.
