The Catholic University of America, a thriving center of scholarship and academic life, is unique as the national university of the Catholic Church and the only higher education' institution founded by the US. bishops. Established in 1887 as a graduate and research center, the university began offering undergraduate education in 1904. Programs emphasize the liberal arts, professional education and personal development.

Accredited by the Middle States Association of colleges and Schools, the university is a founding member and the only Catholic member of the Association of American Universities.

The Brookland/CUA Metrorail station located next to campus provides quick access to resources such as the Library of Congress, National Archives, Smithsonian Institution museum and government agencies, as well as major transportation centers like Union Station and Ronald Reagan National Airport.

The Washington, D.C., area is also home to marry of the nation's top academic, centers, CUA students have access to scholarly resources such as faculty academic programs and library holdings available at other local institutions through the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area. The consortium, comprises 12 colleges and universities: American University, The Catholic University of America Gallaudet University, George Mason University, The George Washington University Georgetown University, Howard, University, Marymount University, Southeastern University, Trinity University, University of the District of Columbia and the University of Maryland.
